Nike's first 4/20-inspired release was the “Hemp Pack” from 2004, featuring three different colorways, the Green Bonsai, the Red Mahogany and the Cascade Blue. Subtly commemorating the informal holiday, Nike dropped the shoe in April with themed materials.
For the first time, the brand created a shoe with a full hemp upper as opposed to the usual textiles used on Nike SBs of the time. The design team also experimented with a unique gum midsole, and an outsole that matched the color of the Swoosh. This particular pair features Red Mahogany detailing throughout.
The Nike SB Dunk made its formal debut in 2002 when Nike officially reappropriated the famed Dunk basketball sneaker originally designed in the 1980s with upgrades suited for the skateboarding community. The man behind it, former Nike executive Sandy Boedecker, is credited with building one of Nike’s most beloved subdivisions in the early 2000s with the Nike SB line.
What sets Nike SB apart from other competitive brands is the unbridled creativity, collaborators, materials, and whimsical highly thematic designs that define a generation of sneakerheads. Nike has explored hundreds of concepts – often with a sense of humor – through its Nike Dunks. Taking inspiration everywhere from beer bottles and horror films to jewelry and significant cities, Dunks represent some of the most beloved and creative models for the brand.
